To enhance bilateral ties and promote educational excellence, the Philippines and China have reaffirmed their commitment to further cooperation in the fields of Science, Technology, Agriculture, and Mathematics (STEM) education. This collaboration aims to foster student mobility, joint research, language teaching, and the expansion of digital education in Philippine universities.
The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Chairman, Popoy De Vera, recently met with China’s Ministry of Education Minister, Huai Jinpeng, and other ASEAN leaders during the China-ASEAN Education Cooperation Week in Guiyang, China. During a separate working meeting with China’s Education Vice Minister, Chen Jie, both sides discussed the necessary steps to implement the 2019 education cooperation agreement between the two countries.
The foundation for promoting educational cooperation between China and the Philippines lies in the Memorandum of Understanding on Higher Education Cooperation signed in August 2019. This agreement aims to expedite bilateral cooperation in higher education and strengthen the historical relations between the two nations.
Chairman De Vera expressed gratitude to the Chinese government for facilitating the establishment of five Confucius institutes in the Philippines. Currently, 300 Filipino students are benefiting from Chinese government scholarships to pursue their studies in China. Vice Minister Chen Jie emphasized China’s commitment to supporting Philippine universities and schools at all levels, including the establishment of Confucius institutes and providing scholarships for Chinese teachers.
The meeting also highlighted the importance of training technical and skilled talents to meet the social and economic development needs of both countries. Vice Minister Chen Jie proposed integrating language teaching programs and vocational education cooperation programs to enhance the training and teaching of these talents.
To ensure quality assurance for Philippine universities that accept Chinese students, the two ministries agreed to establish a Joint Working Group to review the registry of recognized universities in both countries. This collaboration aims to enhance educational linkages and promote excellence in education.
Chairman De Vera emphasized the potential for even greater achievements through collaboration, knowledge sharing, and working together. He envisions a future where the Belt and Road initiative becomes a path to educational excellence and sustainable development. Vice Minister Chen Jie echoed this sentiment, expressing the desire for the China-Philippines partnership to be exemplary in the ASEAN region in promoting quality digital education.
